Olkalou Constituency

Background
Introduction
Emuhaya Constituency which doubles up as Emuhaya Sub County is one of the 290 elective constituencies in Kenya situated in Vihiga County. It is bordered by Khwisero Constituency to the North, Sabatia and Vihiga to the South, Luanda to the East, Butere Mumias to the West and Ikolomani to the South.

Emuhaya Constituency is divided into three County wards; North-East Bunyore Ward, Central Bunyore Ward and West Bunyore Ward. Administratively, the Constituency is divided into two divisions; Luanda division covering; Tongoi, Ipali and Ebukanga locations and Elukongo division which covers Ebusamia, Ebusiratsi, Echichibulu and Emakunda locations with a total of twenty-five(25) sub locations).
Population
The population projection of the constituency based on the 2009 census is 80,147 people. The population density stands at an average of 943 persons per square kilometer.

Economy

The constituency covers an area of 94.5 sq. Kilometers of which 90 sq. km is arable mainly under subsistence agriculture with a very small percentage under tea which is cultivated as a cash crop. Emuhaya constituency economy is dominated by small scale farming and peasantry activities. All Emuhaya residents plant maize for both food and cash.
Other economic activities include brick making, which is done traditionally. There are also small-scale trading enterprises which include shop keeping, buying and selling of cereals and vegetables and ‘bodaboda’ transport business and there are no industries in the constituency apart from a few Jua Kali workshops in market places.

Challenges experienced in the Constituency.

Limited funding ie All projects are dependent on a limited allocation of funds
The problem of piecemeal funding has slowed the period of completion of projects.
Lack of partners for co-funding has also been a challenge.
HIV/AIDS pandemic
High poverty levels.
Population pressure.
